Customer Question

Have the same problem as this guy. Neutral is golden but reverse and fwd are switched at the throttle shifter. How do I flip that back the other way? Had the lower off about 10 x now trying different combos of the linkage rod to the lower unit but no success. I have a 40 merc mariner magnum roughly 96 vintage.

Hi Spencer. It would be 1 number, 1 letter, 6 more numbers. For example, 1A123456

It is always on a sticker on the clamp bracket. Sometimes they also stick it on a sticker on the flywheel cover.

No gots. I've been trying to identify it but no luck. I can tell you the lower unit connection is identical to that in this youtube https://youtu.be/wv6oBxA9Gtw

Is it a 2, 3 or 4 cylinder engine. The 40 was made in all 3 versions.

I just watched the video, you have the jam nut style shift linkage, same in the video, correct?

Also, can you open PDF files if I upload something for you in that format?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No nut attachment. The splined male lower unit seats into the female linkage rod. Yes I can get pdf.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I have the lower unit separated right now but not removed. The shift linkage is just slightly disconnected. Unconnected the prop clicks cw and will not turn ccw.

There are to many variables here. Without the serial number I don't know what you have. I will opt out.
