2000 Crusader 7.4L MPI MEFI FWC in 2000 2900 Tiara
problem started yesterday - CEL came on at idle - ran rough - when increase throttle, ran smooth - cruised fine at 3200 RPM for an hour. However, when doc*****, *****e rough at idle. Docked and stopped engines. When tried to restart, port engine cranks but won't start. later in afternoon still wouldn't start. Left overnight. Started up in morning - but ran rough at idle, again ran fine at cruising speed. Got home hour later. Shut off engines, again can't restart port engine.
plugs, wires, dist cap changed at end last season.pulled coil wire , corrosion on post, cleaned it but still no start.

If you got a code or a coolant temp sensor high then that would mean the engines were overheating. Have you run a compression test to see if the engine blew a head gasket (or worse) as a result?

Are you sure about that - I thought when the signal was high that meant cold? Also temp gauges are both at normal - and heat gun showed no diff between engins. All exhaust manifolds/risers hoses changed last season.With the engine running completely fine this morning on a 20 mile return trip home - definitely didn't overheat - and coolant level proper in both engines - engine not too hot to touch on exchanger

You said coolant temp sensor high so I thought you meant it was overheating.
If the engine isn't heating up that will cause rough running as well, as it will always be in cold start mode. Have you verified what the engine temps were with an infra red temp gun?

gauges show 170/180 - idle/cruise and gun on various parts of engine agrees - bot port/SB were w/I a few degs of each other

Got it. Have you replaced the ECT on at least one of the engines to see if the code clears?

not yet - but I cleared the code w/ the Rinda and the code hasn't come back - but the engine isn't starting.- I was tjinking the code may have been inactive - was just stored - was there from commissioning two months ago when it really was cold - 40deg

Would a bad ECT prevent the engine from starting

A bad ECT can prevent a hot engine from starting, as it would be in cold start mode and effectively flood the engine out.
Are you using diacom, or the handheld techmate?

I have diacom as well. If you want to make a 30 second recording with the key on engine off, and then crank it for a few seconds, and then upload the recording i'll be happy to take a look at it for you.

If you are having a problem with your other engine as well make sure to do a recording on both.
