My 40 hp mercury outboard idles when the motor is raised with the prop just submerged. It stalls when I lower the transom. Any ideas?

Do you know any history of the engine?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No not the full history I bought the boat 5 years ago and have always stored it for the winter elevated in our boathouse. I just put it in the water started it up. It seemed to be running a little rough Then when I lowered the mother to take it for a spin it cut out. I have had it at the dock testing it. It starts and runs when ever the motor is tilted but then dies when I lower it to driving position. Weird!

Does the motor leave a sheen on the water when you lower it down?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No. However I do notice bubbles coming from the lower unit from what appears to be gromet
Expert:  Charles replied 1 year ago.
Around where on the gear case?

do you have a fuel smell currently?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The bubbles are coming from a plug that is at the same level as the geer grease overflow port but about 9 inches further to the trailing edge of the gear box
Yes now that you mention it there is a strong gas smell when the motor is running

Did you give up on me Charles?
Expert:  Charles replied 1 year ago.
No I was cooking.

Ok, has the engine been sitting for sometime unused?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Oh cool. Somthing good I hope😄. Yes the engin has been sitting all winter
Expert:  Charles replied 1 year ago.
Yes steaks, grilled mushrooms and onions.

How old is your fuel?

Have you checked it for any sign of water?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
That's a good point. I'll put new fuel in the tank in the morning and see if that helps. Thanks Charles Enjoy those steaks!
Expert:  Charles replied 1 year ago.
Sounds good. Make sure that you drain the carbs before you prime it with the new fuel. If there is water in them, it will still not run correctly.

Tomorrow I will be online after 530 PM CST. I do have a day job as well.

If you can call the US, I have enclosed a phone offer for you to talk to me as you work on the engine.

That's very kind. Thanks so much!
