I have a Johnson 175 oceanpro. It just started smokeing really bad. Ialso have oil pouring out of the Exhaust and the bottom end of the engine. Rings or could it be the head gasket?
Hello. First start with a compression and spark check and let me know the results.
Hi there,
If your engine had been running fine previously the first thing you need to do is check the fuel -oil in the carburetors. Remove a carburetor fuel drain screw and see if what comes out is very dark and the color of your oil in the oil tank. Fuel in the carb should have a very light oil color--more like fuel less like straight oil.
The VRO-OMS--oil mixing -fuel pumps on these engines have a common condition after several years of use in that they may start to back oil up into the carburetors and progess even further back into the fuel supply hose when sitting.
If you have the original fuel- oil pump on your engine it is a high probability the pump is failing. Not all that serious if you catch it and address the issue soon enough.
Another option on this pump if it will continue to perform properly on the fuel side is to disconnect the oiling side and pre-mix your fuel to a 50:1 ratio always afterwards.
The right way to assure trouble free pump performance is to install a new pump assembly. Pump is a bit pricey but purchased from BRP-Evinrude-Johnson dealer has a one year warranty.
Let me know your exact model number and I will advise further.
I pre mix my fuel @50/1. The engine ran fine for a long time then started to run crappy like it had a miss, I replaced the spark plugs to no avail. Now when it runs.... way above idle to stay running it littrealy spewes oil all over the place in large quantities. Smokes like a smoke machine!
You need to be sure you have good fuel and oil and that it has been pre-mixed properly. One pint of oil for every 6 gallons of gasoline. Fuel needs to be E-10 or less (up to 10% ethanol) only.
Some of the pre-mix fuel purchased at the pumps at marinas can have issues.
Check fuel pressure out of the fuel - oil pump. Should be minimum 3 psi at idle and over approximately 10 psi at wide open throttle.
Have you taken a fuel sample from the boats tank? Prime some fuel out into a clear bottle or jar. If it is very dark in color it maybe an issue. Take another look at your old spark plugs--do they all look to be functioning the same or are they all oily.
Does the engine actually have a miss and if so at what rpm.
Please let me know what you find and I will be glad to advise further.
As some of the pre-mix fuel purchased at the pumps at marinas can have issues. AS I stated prev iously, I premix my own fuel 50/1, no pump on boat.

I will take a sample in the morning and reply the answer, but I have always mixed my self scince owning the boat. Does the engine actually have a miss and if so at what rpm. Engine shakes violently at any rpm. throttle needs to be at 3/4 to start, then backed off alittle. Will not run anywhere near idle.
Hello,
Thank you for the return responses pertaining to your engine issues. Please see my responses below.
Yes no pumps on the boat. The only pump is your fuel -oil pump assembly on the engine referred to as a VRO or OMS pump. Variable ratio oiling or Oil mixing system respectively. This is where you would have to check for fuel pressure between the pump outlet nipple and the carburetor fuel manifold. You would need a 15 PSI fuel pressure gauge and some connecting hoses rated for these pressures and fuel use. The pulse hose for this pump should be checked as well. This hose connects the OMS pump assembly to the power head crankcase. The pulses from the power head are what operate the pump. If this hose has raw fuel in it and more raw fuel comes out of it when you prime your fuel primer bulb it means your pump is bad and flooding the engine with un metered fuel.
That's good. I know now you are quite familiar with correctly mixing your fuel to oil ratio. Thank you.

You may need to check your carburetors as well to confirm whether there is intermittent flooding from some or all of the carburetors. The carburetors may require new oem carb repair kits installed. With wide spread use of Ethanol fuels older fuel system components have become more of a failure issue and present with various symptoms.
There is literally a puddle of oil sprayed and laying under engine during/after running. Really puzzled. will look at fuel in the am. thanks!
I still suspect a fuel system problem--flooding and unmetered fuel.
If you do not find this to prove out then we can discuss other troubleshooting tools. Please check all of the items I have mentioned so far. Thank you.
Hi! How are you doing with your Johnson 175 ocean pro? I am anxious to help with any issues you may still have. Thank you.
