1986 Evinrude 140 HP, I sank it last june after flushing it with fress water and had it running within 40 minutes. then took it out for the day and ran ran it every day for 10 minutes after to keep it going. I replaced the rectifier with Evinrude equipment in the begiing of the year. Battery changes at 14 - 15 volts at 3000 rpm. Then two days ago went out and run fine for the first 15 minutes thru the 5 miles per hour zone. go to rough water and she bogged down and died. got it restarted and sputtering in to the channel in the 5 mile hour zone ran 1000 rpm fine stoped for 1/2 hour and sh restarted with know problems. got home to run with fresh water and she went to 3500 rpms on the start.I let sit for 1/2 hour and she started at 3500 rpm. that day I did change the water separator and ball be for i went out.so when i start the boat the first shot she start at 3500 rmps

Hi my name is XXX X will assist you.
You have a fuel restriction in the boat side fuel system. When you were in rough water you knocked all the crud in the fuel tank loose and it has contaminated the fuel system. When you have a fuel restriction this will cause a lean fuel condition and cause the engine to rev. Check that all the linkage is connected nothing holding the throttle open or timing advanced. If all that checks good clean the fuel system. Remove the carbs, disassemble, clean and install carbs kits.
the carb are setting right the butter flys are closed at start all linkage looks ok and the the timing advanced look to be setted all the way back and i can move it with my hand forward. in cleaning the carbs should i just empty them and spry them by the screw on the bowl or do i need to take them appart. is there a rev limiter on my boat?
The only way to get your carbs cleaned is to remove, disassemble, clean and install carb kits. Yes the engine has a rev limiter.
is there a good youtube video to watch for installing the carb kit. Is there any I need to kown when disableing them or installing the kit?
Not really these are very simple carbs just pay attention to where each jet goes. I can give you a parts break down. Take pictures for reference. Just remove the 4 bolts # XX holding the carb body # XX on you don't have to remove the throttle plate # X.

before i order the carb kit is there an easy way to check the timing advanced. I do have a timing light for my car can i use that?
If the timer base moves forward to the stop, the timing is advancing. But you can check the advance in degrees. The test requires you to run the engine to full throttle under a load. Then you connect the timing light to # X cylinder and point the light at the timing pointer and flywheel watching the marks line up. Your timing light must be able to read up to 5,000 rpms. Some lights won't read at the rpm.
Thanks I will need to get it to start at 1000 rpms so i can get it into gear. thanks I check back in fa few days after i get the kits.
OK, I'll be here.
Before i buy the carb kit how could i narrow to a saciffic car
Why would you only want to rebuild one carb if one is dirty their all dirty?
to save money, ok one more thing i discontected the primer pump and I could get it stated. should i be able to start the boat with no primer selinoid. even if i press the ball and hear the gass entering the carbs it does not start. I tried with the red lever up and no start then disconnecting the power and no start. then with it on it does start normal then goes to 3000 RPM I did shut i down ASAP. also Is the gas bump manual or electric I have the VRO disabled. i can not tell. what should the PSI be i going to buy a gage for gas tommarow,
Remove one carburetor and disassemble it look at the bowl is it clean or dirty. If it's dirty remove all carbs and disassemble, clean and install carb kits. If the carbs are dirty it won't matter what position the primer is in. The engine cranking and running to high rpms is telling you the carbs are dirty. The engine will start and run with no fuel pump pressure it just won't run long. Everything points to the carbs. If they are dirty there is no getting around cleaning them. The VRO pump is the fuel pump, fuel pressure 3-15 psi.
what drives the gas pump. It has a hose going into the block and no wires except for vro alarm. I thought it was electic. can I get non vro pump to replace it? there cheap 89.00 a vro is 400.00 I have ordered the kits. how many lbs to blowout the carbs with the air hose I do not want to damage anything
The VRO pump is pulse driven from the crankcase, the up and down stroke of the piston drives the pump. There are rebuild kits for the fuel side of the pump. But you may not need a VRO pump just a carb rebuild. The carbs only need about 25psi to blow them out.
Ok Did all 4 carbs 120.00 not bad took 2 hours last night. drive to the dock this morning to give it a test and she started like a charm 900 rpm with primer in the on postion. did not have time to go out but did idle for 10 min and put it in drive while tide to the dock did not give an gas. than idle for a another 5 min got home and went to flush and she whent to 1900 rpms. did not have time to take it back to the dock what give what would cause it to idle so hight with the muffs on?
These engines don't like to run out of the water with no back pressure. Be sure all the throttle plates are closed. If any are open a little bit it will rev high. If you are going to be running the engine the next day it is not necessary to flush every time.
I only go out once a week, I took out the thermostats Last year. have not had a problem, I 'm going to try to go out tomarrow and see how she runn with the throtle open.thanks for all your help thus far.
Great , I will be around.
ok went out yesterday boat idle was 1900 rpms. once in gear went to 1000 rpms normal idle. took 20 minutes to go thru harbor no stalling ran good. went to open it up and she went for 30 second and then bogged down and stalled. started right up and went in low 1500 rpms ran ok sounded a little off but not bad. opened it up and she went then died again............ she started right up but could not run over 2000 rpms.
Did you clean the fuel tank of all the old gas. Or are you running your freshly rebuilt carbs on old dirty fuel? Run the engine on another fuel source. If the engine runs better then the boat side fuel system is dirty and clogging up. Check for spark on all cylinders when engine ids acting up. Use a timing to watch the flashes should be steady on all cylinders.
there was no junk in the carb when i did them also there was only like 3 specs of dirt maybe in the filter. could I use a gal gas can I know is clean. could i disconnect the fuel line from the water separator and put it thru the top of the spout of the pastic gas can?to check the timeing i have an auto timing light how or could i use that?gas mix 2 ounce to 1 galI use a 16 2 cycle to 6 of gas now.I
Yes to all of that except connect the hose to the fuel line to the engine leaving the separator out. The timing isn't going to have anything to do with your issue. Unless you have been adjusting the linkage. The timing on these engines doesn't change or go out of time unless you have messed with the linkage.
I have not touched the linkage at all. So I can use the gas can run the hose from the can to the separator were the old line came in?
Yes you can use the gas container but leave the separator out of the connection we want to eliminate any source that could cause a restriction.
I just posted the a video of the 140 out on the water in HD very good please watch and give me your thoughts. going out tomorrow with fress gas in a 2 gal can.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydbgi05zFlU
The engine seem to run fine except they never went to full throttle.
