how do I remove the lower unit on my 80 model 70 hp omc so I can replace the water pump, shift rod is my problem

Make (of engine): Johnson
Model (of engine): J70ELSA
Year: 1980
Horsepower: 70

Already Tried:
got bolts removed but think shift rod is holding it, manual is vaugue, I had a 50 hp that was electrics shift and had no problem removing it, this is my first attempt at water pump replacement

Hi my name isXXXXX will assist you.

 

There is a shift coupler # XXXXX under the intake just below bottom carburetor. Remove screw # XXXXX and this will release the shift rod. Use a 1/4 dive swivel socket, long extension and a pair of mechanical fingers to loosen and remove the screw.Diagram of 1980 E70ELCSA Evinrude / Johnson Evinrude CYLINDER & CRANKCASE Diagram and Parts

and then rod slids down and out? what about rubber grommets them seem to be in motor housing? they slide out along with shift rod or stay in housing? just wondering how much force I need to apply

The grommets will stay once you have the bolt out it can be a little aggravating to get down just pull harder you won't damage anything.
