Customer Question

Merc 60 HP 1991 Was running it for the first time this season. After getting on plane engine would run fine and then after awhile I would lose power and the motor would pop out of gear and shut down. It would start right back up again with no problem but would keep shutting down after awhile. And awhile means like 3~4 minutes.

Welcome, this question may need more than a single answer. Please post back with additional questions on this at any time.

There are a couple of distinct possibilities.
First check the quality of your fuel. If you are trying to run fuel over a couple months or fuel mixed with old stuff, dump it.
Take the fuel line off the connector going to the engine and using the primer bulb fill a quart jar with fuel. Let it sit for a little while and see if the fuel is yellowed, separates into distinct layers or has debris in it.
Remove the air silencer from in front of the carbs. On the bottom of the carb is a drain screw, drain into some paper towels. If there is discoloration or gum on the drain you will need to clean out the carbs and replace the gaskets.
If you "pass" the fuel quality test lets start the boat and run it. Just as it starts to quit have a helper squeeze the primer bulb. If the engine picks up rpm and keeps running then the fuel pump is weak, is leaking internally, or a restriction in the fuel lines. Due to 20+ years I would rebuild the fuel pump.
Do these easy tests and post back to me what you find.
Thanks.
