Customer Question

I have a 1982 90 hp Merc outboard and I wish to replace the starter as it seems to have a heavy draw down and will barely turn over the engine as well when the key is engaged the wire from the solenoid to the starter almost immediately gets very hot.
Question are there different types of starters for this motor or are they interchangeable for quite a number of years and HP ratings. One source I read was that all the starters from the late 70's into the 90's are the same starter

It fits the 90 thru 175 Hp motors, arco sells a really good aftermarket

But can get them rebuilt at most any auto starter repair place

If the cable is getting hot, just from the starter or solinoid, it could be a bad starter cable or battery cable because if the starter was going bad the starter itself would be hot also

I would remove every artery cable and starter cable and clean them and make them bright and shinny

Then after that try it, if it still does the same, you need to do a voltage drop test and see where the voltages drop, it could be the starter solenod

I had the starter apart yesterday, the brushes looked ok and I cleaned the armature with a fine emory cloth. The one spot that looked suspicious was the terma

I had the starter apart yesterday and the only part that looked suspicious was the terminal where the power comes in from the solinoid and two brushes attach. This seemed to have been fused from high heat and this is the cable which would get very hot in short order when the ignition was activated. When I put the starter back on and turned the ignition there was only a click and almost immediate smoke arising so I immediately turned off the key

I had the starter off yesterday and when taken apart the suspicious area was the terminal bolt which comes from the solinoid (yellow cable) this had evidence of high heat on the inside and is also where two brushes are connected on the inside. The bolt head on the inside appeared to be fused to the brush connections. Would this appear to have been caused from a malfunction from the interior of the starter or from a malfuntion of the solinoid. The solinoid appears to kick in ok but then smoke will rise from the cable to the starter
