Hi, The drive must be in forward gear the control must be in forward gear and the lower unit must be in forward gear.To put the lower in fwd. turn the splined shift shaft clockwise till stops turn propshaft to the left to lock in to fwd. When pushing the lower unit up turn propshaft to engage the drive shaft. Make sure your water tube and shift rod are lined up. Thanks click "Accept" button. Post back with questions. Tan

we have done all that, does it matter if we put it forward befrore or after taking apart?

If your not taking the upper off it does not matter only for reassembly. If your pulling the entire drive you have to put in forward. Your water tube should have a plastic guide tube in the water pump the old one is slid up the tube on the upper tube. If you don't get the tube right this will prevent the lower from going up all the way. Thanks post back if still having a problem..Tan

we got one side, now we cannot get the other one off to grease the u joints & re-assemble? CAN YOU THINK OF ANY THING THAT WOULD PREVENT US FROM REMOVING IT.

Make sure the drive is in forward gear. If it still won't come off put a piece of wood between the top of drive and the transom shield to get leverage to pry the drive off.Tan
