havent tried anything yet need to get a guideline on whats wrong

Hi. There are alot of things that could be causing your running issues. If the motor has been sitting for awhile, the carb. & fuel pump should be rebuilt, the ignition system should be serviced (points & condensers replaced), the gearcase oil drained & refilled. I want to make sure this is a 9.9 hp & not a 9.5 hp Johnson, (they are different). If you could get me the model number of the motor it would help. (the model number is XXXXX on the transom bracket of the motor, where the motor mounts to the boat). Please get back to me. Thanks.

Hi. Ok. Good Luck.
hi model number - mq11cand it is a 9.5 hp still having trouble its still not running right
Hi. This motor is a 1965 9.5 hp Johnson. They are know to have problems with exhaust leaks. There are usually 2 areas that they leak in, one is at the exhaust hose at the back of the motor, (the hose comes off the back of the exhaust housing & goes out the back of the motor pan housing), this is an easy fix if you can get the part. (hose # XXXXX), the next area is the shift rod boot that in the bottom of the exhaust housing & this is a harder job to fix. It's been awhile since I've done one of these but you have to at least remove the lower gearcase housing, (shift rod boot # XXXXX). The parts are no longer available from Johnson, there is a please that stock's older motor parts & it's in the state of Washington, its called Seaway Marine #800-332-0803 & they maybe able to help you with the parts. This is an old motor & I hope that it's in good shape, you may put alot of money into trying to fix it & not be able to complete the job due to lack of parts available. I hope this helps. Good Luck & if I can be of further help please contact me. Please click accept & Thanks.
