I have a 1982 Evinrude 70 HP motor. Can I change the empeller

Customer Question

I have a 1982 Evinrude 70 HP motor. Can I change the empeller on the water pump myself?
Where can I get some information on how to do it?

Thank You

yes it's actually rather easy.
You have to remove the lower unit which is just held up by 4 bolts to the upper part of the engine.
You'll find those bolts about half way up or so on the lower unit.
Remove those and the whole lower unit will slide right out of the upper part.
The pump housing is around the shaft
remove the houseing, impeller, and replace.
Here's a diagram of your engine showing the parts breakdown. #55 is the housing and #56 is the impeller.

Not quit right besides disconnecting the shift linkage under the bottom carb, you will also need to remove the trim tab to get access to the 5th mounting bolt underneath that.

After reading your reply and looking at the motor, I have decided to have someone repair it for me.

I understand if you have not it before it can be a little overwhelming. If you would like to try it just let me know and I can try to help you in greater detail. It should not take a tech much over an hour to do the job.
