Customer Question

Turned key and it clunked twice. Jumped it and it started, drove 5 feet and it died. Turned the key, no crank, not even the clunk- clunk.
JA: Can you turn the steering wheel at all? And what about the key? Is it worn or damaged?
Customer: Wheel turns fine. Key is relatively new and not worn.
JA: What is the model/year of your BMW?
Customer: 2004 325xi
JA: Are you fixing your 325xi yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Haven't tried as it is undiagnosed. I have a program tool handheld by schwaben.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: The battery was replaced in May.

Hi there.

If it started when you jumped it, chances are the issue is with the battery getting discharged and/or the charging system malfunctioning. Do you have access to a voltmeter you're familiar with so you could perform a few basic electrical tests under my guidance?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I have a volt meter and I have a hand held diagnostic tool called schwaben which you can look up at ECS tuning.

OK. First, make sure the battery cable terminals are clean and tight. Once that is done, let's try that voltmeter;

  • measure battery voltage with key and all accessories off - should be over 12.5 volts.
    • If not, the battery will have to be charged and load tested for the next test to yield accurate results.
  • start the engine, then measure battery voltage with the engine running at 2000 RPM
    • with all accessories OFF, voltage should read more than 13.5 volts
    • with headlights and A/C ON, voltage should read more than 13 volts

Please let me know what you find.
