Customer Question

I have a 1990 m 30 convertible that blows through oil...whether I'm driving or not...I can fill it up...and there is usually a small puddle on the ground (not a lot but noticeable.) I cleaned the engine off underneath and on the sides of it...oil is showing up on the cross member under the center of the engine and dripping onto the ground there...have replaced valve cover gasket...snugged up oil pan gasket (there are drops of oil on the heads of some of the bolts). No signs of oil from the front and main seals...seems to be collecting on the drivers side of the engine where block meets the heads (??) I would burn a little oil sometimes when it started...but it turned out the PCV line was sucking extra oil into the intake where it was puddling up and getting pulled in directly...I have been to two BMW "experts" who haven't been able to help so far...what is your thought?

Hi, this "m20" engine in your car has an oil drain tube for the cylinder head that runs from the bottom of the intake, down to hole in the block. The o-rings on this tube can get dried out and leak over time. I would pull the airbox and intake tube, then take a look in that area. It's tricky to get the tube out, it is spring loaded. The spring can get weak too and may not seal as well. Clean it very well, then run the engine and watch closely with a bright light to pinpoint the leak. The pipe is #11 in the diagram below.

What a simple idea...will be checking it out...liked the answer and quick too...I do have one question for you...can I still sign up for the $79 for a months worth of questions with you? Happy to pay the $69 for advice so far...but would like be able to "get back" to you on details if this isn't the fix...or some other questions pop up...Thanks, John
