Customer Question

Should i trust a bmw that has had 3 transmissions(1 original and 2 used) that failed (including damage to flywheel and crankshaft parts) installed and finally a new transmission installed along with idling issues?

hi this is ed, and i don't think i would want to deal with a car that is having issues like that. especially an m5. these are expensive to work on, expensive parts wise, and unless it was just a really really good deal, i don't think i would want to continue to foot the bill on a car like this. it sounds like it might be more of a headache than one would want. not to discount the problems with the transmission, but the idling issue could get extremely expensive to deal with. hopefully this information probes to be helpful, and if you need any other information, don't hesitate to ask. thanks in advance, ed.

Hello Red. I already own the car. My BMW dealership did this to my car via the aftermarket warranty they sold me. I don't think the car is safe, worth the same or will ever be right. Looking for insight.

wow, sorry to hear this!!!what has caused the problems with the transmission? did they tell you? no you are right, it has diminished value and depends on what is causing the issues with the transmission, as to whether it is safe or will ever be right. i hate to say it, because the m5 is a fine, fine car, i have owned 3 of them throughout the years, but it might be time to to weigh your options and decide if this is the car to keep or try and trade out of it. see if you can find out something about why this keeps eating transmissions and let me know so i can help you a little more. what is going on with the idle? thanks again, ed.

Originally the Smg failed. Dealer installed two salvage transmissions. One wouldn't work once installed and the other was covered in sand and had to have parts added to it to get it to work initially. It failed also and damaged flywheel and crankshaft parts. Finally warranty paid to put in new transmission. Idling issue is know issue. Vanos or zanos issue. My car was in shop for 10 months with 13 + trips for same issues and car failing on expressway.

i really hate to hear that the extended warranty company has caused you so much grief. that is the problem with some of them, they try to get out as cheap as they can, and leave the consumer, or the shop holding the bag. as far as the idling problem you are having, do you have a service engine light on? if the vanos units are causing idling issues, they should bring on the light. there's also idle control actuators under the intake that control the throttle butterflies, that can also be an issue, but whatever the problem, there should be a check engine light, and whatever the issue is should be taken care of by your extended policy. fortunately on something like this they will have to use new parts, as most salvage yards aren't going to take items like those off of a used motor to sell. hopefully this information has been helpful to you, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions. thanks in advance, ed.

So would you trust a car after these two incidents as fixed?

Picture
Expert:  redrkt535 replied 301 days and 7 hours ago.

yes now that they have a new transmission in there, and get the idling issue taken care of i think i might be less weary of the car. it wasn't actually that the car was the problem, it is that the parts being installed were. i don't think i would have as much of an issue keeping or trusting the car now that i know a little more. thanks again, ed.

Customer replied 301 days and 6 hours ago.

Initially Expert said he wouldn't trust a car that had those types of issues. Then he states he would at the end. If anything I gave more information as to why car was damaged during period. I've run across a network of BMW mechanics who won't speak negatively regardless of facts due to fear of retribution from documented comments against BMW.

i'm sorry you are unhappy with the information i provided, but you originally asked if you should trust a bmw that has gone through 3 different transmissions, without telling me the whole story. i wouldn't trust a car that has for no reason torn up 3 transmissions, but after you tell me that they installed a used transmission that had parts missing and covered in sand, of course i'm going to rethink my original assessment. i was trying to give you an honest answer, and i'm sorry that you rated that as poor service. have a nice day, and thanks again, ed.

Customer replied 301 days and 6 hours ago.

Regardless of car as the culprit or poor service as the culprit the car went unfixed properly over numerous visits. So you would trust a service group who told you your car was fixed well over 13+ times ? I doubt it. And if you didn't trust them you wouldn't Trust the car. That's all I'm saying. I appreciate your time. Thank you.

no problem

Relist: Inaccurate answer.
Specialist changed answer. Please look at chain back and forth. The fact never changed that the car has had 4 transmissions and idling issues regardless of details. So regardless of parts or service being issue he shouldn't have changed answer. I've run into mechanics who won't speak on subject period once they know how BMW has handled car.

Hi, new expert here. What exactly would you like to know. Please articulate your question exactly and I will answer honesty, thanks.

Customer replied 299 days and 6 hours ago.

As a BMW mechanic would you feel safe in or buying a 06 M5 that has had 1 failed original transmission, 2 used transmissions that were found in junk yards and Frankenstein'd with new parts to get to work and then another brand new transmission installed by BMW dealer?(3 times in and out of shop) Used transmissions also damaged flywheel and crankshaft parts that were eventually replaced. Also car was in shop over 10 times for vanos issue many M5's have had. Car was in dealer service for 9+ months. Also car damaged on exterior while in dealer possesion and fixed/painted. Also tire punctured while in dealer possession. Looking for BMW expert view on car as no one wants to buy it due to all the history caused by dealer.

This is basically a yes or no question.... Is there something else you are hoping to learn, or do you literally want to know if, yes or no, I would feel safe in or want to buy this car given its history?

The reason I am asking, is because if you rate my answer as poor, or bad service, this is a NEGATIVE against me, so I need to be clear on your expectations prior to answering.

Please confirm. Thank you. Hope you are having a nice 4th of july.

Customer replied 299 days and 5 hours ago.

I'm hoping to learn if I'm justified in not accepting this poor type of service.

Ok, so now your question has changed?

I'm not sure if you're referring to the service you've received from bmw? Your dealer? Your warranty company? This website? Me? Your previous expert? Etc?

Please confirm.

Customer replied 299 days and 5 hours ago.

No it hasn't. You asked me a seperate question and I answered it. My original question was about the car. I provided detail information as you requested initially.

I'm not sure I will get an answer from this site that is not biased based on negative rating or negative review about BMW service or dealers. Interesting.

I have no problem being honest and providing what I belive to be the best and most accurate advice, whether it is negative against bmw, a dealer, a mechanic, etc. I do this frequently.

However, you appear to have a predetermined agenda or to be looking for a very specific answer, or have a predisposition against anyone who is related to bmw in any way. I don't think I can provide the answer you are "looking for" so I will not be able to answer. I am sorry that you are having issues with your car, and are upset with bmw and your dealer, but I don't think I will be able to help.

Best wishes to you with your vehicle, I hope you are able to find the outcome you are seeking. Happy 4th.

Kind regards,

Steve

Predetermined? No. I just don't like to jump thru hoops. I asked a basic question for this site to answer. Flip flopping from first guy. And now you ask for detail and to reword question. I do. You ask a different question. I answered it. You tell me I changed question. The first question i asked was very simple and Based on you and your experience. If your answer is explained then I can't argue it. I assume you are worried about me using this for court or as testimony. I'm not. This is for my own peace of mind. This isn't a online shakedown of a website. But you are looking for something that's not there rather then answering the question.
