HI,

Ok, you first need to firmly establish whether the compressor is cycling on or not. If you have to use a flashlight to confirm seeing the compressor clutch engage, please do that.

Since ac not working can be due to mechanical, electrical, or refrigerent related, we need to start with this.

Once you know that, we can proceed.

If not engaging, then you will need a voltmeter and working knowledge of both the voltmeter and automotive electrical systems.

You will also need a set of ac manifold gages. these read both high and low pressure.

Only knowing the low side by the little gage on the can of refrigerent isnt enough. It would be like only telling your doctor one of the two blood pressure readings. He can not diagnose off of just one reading and we cannot diagnose off of just one of the two pressure readings.

If you do not have this equipment and cannot rent or borrow them, then honestly, your best bet is to have a professional shop check it out. Putting in refrigerent without knowing how much is in it and therefore how much to add is a very quick and sure way to blow out your compressor. I just got thru replacing a compressor that someone added too much refrigerent because it wasnt cooling well. Turned out there was a restriction in the system and he turned a $150 repair into an $1100 repair.

ive been told that the compressor can sometimes not turn on because there isnt enought preasure or refigerent in the system. so i need the gauges to check that right?

Customer replied330 days and 1 hours ago.

can you help me find the cycle switch so i can tst that

Hi,

yes, low refrigerent will cause the compressor to either fast cycle, or if completely empty, then it will not come on as the pressure switch senses this and prevents the compressor from engaging which could damage it.

If this is the case and it is completely out of refrigerent, then there is 100% definitely a leak in the system. Refrigerent doesnt dissipate on its own. It is basically the same type of unit as a home ac and as they are closed systems and dont need to be completely charged, neither does an automotive ac system.

If completely empty, then ac dye is injected into the system and a black light used to trace the leak.

Yes, I need both pressure readings to know if system is low or out.

If you feel confident in working around electrical, you can disconnect the wiring harness connector to the compressor, run jumper wires to the compressor.

If it kicks on, then check to see if blowing cold. If it is, then you have plenty of refrigerent and the problem is electrical.

If compressor kicks on and is blowing warm, then likely low on refrigerent, but could also be a restriction in the system, which having both pressure readings would tell us.

If it doesnt kick on, then compressor is bad and needs to be replaced

Hi,

On your mini cooper, you cannot bypass the pressure switch with a jumper wire like on older vehicles.

The pressure switch sends a signal to the onboard computer in millivolts. jumpering it sends signal in volts and will damage the onboard computer.

Please dont try this.

Instead jumper the compressor itself as I suggested
