Customer Question

We have a 2002 BMW M3. We are now on our second replacement (used) transmission. There is an issue with syncing the new tranny with the other systems. The car will run for a short period and then just shut down. We've had it towed back to the dealership twice (where it currently sits) and the diagnostics are not conclusive. Is this a computer or electrical issue? Or neither? Or both?

Country: United States

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer BMW,

My name is XXXXX XXXXX it will be my pleasure to assist you today.

this would usually indicate an issue with the smg control unit or possibly the temp sensor if it is not being replaced, not the transmission itself. although, a temp sensor problem should log a conclusive fault

the software should be updated if it has not, then smg control unit replacement would be next

you might consider asking the dealer to invovle their regional technical representative from bmw head office if they are stumped, I have seen these guys solve issues like this time and time again that have been stumping dealers for weeks.

I hope that is helpful, please let me know if you have further questions, or if I can clarify anything for you.

Best wishes to you on your repair.
