Hello,

I was able to find this without the VIN. I just replaced the side panel wood trim on an X5 just recently and this step was one of the needed steps.

The shifter comes off as part of the wood trim. You do need to remove the knob on the I-drive just by lifting straight up. Then pry the wood trim with a plastic tool to remove the trim.

Here is a picture of the instructions.
