Customer Question

I have a 1998 528i that has no spark. I have fuel pressure at the fuel rail. I have swapped the following from another 1998 528I that I have that runs: cps, ckps, fuel pump, tps, mass air flow sensor, both computers, coils and spark plugs. I'm running out of ideas. I didn't do a compression check but the engine sounds normal during cranking and with spark plug out I can feel the four cycles to indicate cams are timed. I'm lost!

I swapped out the two computers in the right rear section of the engine compartment. When I first started I hooked up a scan tool and it wouldn't read anything as if the computers were faulty. I swapped them out and then the scan tool would read but only showed a mass air flow problem that was from the other car.

Your ecu is bad.

The reason that swapping the other one in didn't make it start is because you cannot swap ecus, since they are permanently paired to the immobilizer and key from the original vehicle. So, if you want to make this one car start with parts from the other, you will need to swap the ecu, immobilizer unit, key and key cylinder.

Hello Steve, I have swapped the ECU, entire steering column, key and immobilizer and still no spark. Engine cranks and fuel pressure at the rail. I also swapped cps, ckps, mass airflow sensor, throttle position sensors, all spark plugs and coil packs. I'm really getting irritated. Any ideas????
