Hello, thank you for choosing Just Answer. My name is XXXXX XXXXX X will advise you concerning your potential E34 M5 purchase.

These were the last of the hand built 'M-Cars'. The E39 was built on the production line and just fitted with upgrades. The E34s were individually produced by hand in the M plant. As a result, the values are very sensitive to originality and mileage.

There were less than 2,000 E34 M5s sold in North America from 1990-93 when they were available here. There is no way to know for sure how many remain, but these cars are tough to find. If you are serious about buying one, you will need to look all over the country and be prepared to fly out and pick it up or have it shipped.

There are no special things to look for on the e34 M5 when buying. Like all BMWs, maintenance is key. You want to find a vehicle with an extensive maintenance history, low miles, and as few owners as possible. I also suggest staying away from automatic transmission models. Because of their performance, these cars have certainly been flogged a time or two. Automatics do not lend themselves to such abuse and are very expensive to repair or replace. Also, if the engine has been rebuilt, I would want to know it was done by an experienced pro.

So, to recap an offer tips:

1. Condition makes all the difference in price. For a low mileage, mint condition, all original example, I would expect to pay nearly $10,000. For a high mileage, leaking, faded paint, worn interior, vehicle, you could pick it up for $3,000.

2. Few were made so be patient in your search. Unless you stumble across the perfect car, don't buy the first one you see.

3. Ask for records and a detailed history of the car.

4. HAVE A MECHANIC INSPECT THE VEHICLE. Do a compression test during this inspection.

5. If you can find a 3.8L euro spec, buy it!

I hope my answer is helpful. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Best Regards,
Stephen
