1993 BMW 318i: starter..the intake to get the inside bolt

Resolved Question:

I have a 1993 BMW 318i, and an trying to remove the starter for replacement or repair. do i really need to remove the intake to get the inside bolt?

Hello. I am not sure if the 93 is the m40 engine. If the pictures do not correspond I am including the instructions for the other engines for the 318i below. I am pretty sure the bolt can be snuck out.Usually we remove the exhaust and do part of the removal at the bell housing from under the vehicle.

12 41 020Starter - Remove, install/replace (M40)
GRRA5011-500UGeneral Data, refer to Page 12 00 ... Read fault memory. Disconnect battery earth lead.
GRRA3612-006Release hose clamp from intake elbow.
GRRA3612-007Disconnect plug-in connection. Unscrew bolts.
GRRA3612-008Unclip upper section of suction-filter housing and place to one side.
GRRA3612-009Open clip on dipstick.
GRRA3612-011Loosen clamp at top. Disconnect electrical connections on dipstick.
GRRA3612-012Remove idle actuator from rubber mounting.
GRRA3612-013Remove bolt from dipstick bracket.
GRRA5011-127HRemove oil dipstick. Installation note: Check O-Ring on oil dipstick, replacing if necessary.
GRRA3612-014Remove cable duct from intake manifold.
GRRA3612-015Remove nuts.
GRRA3612-016Unscrew cables.
GRRA3612-017Press downwards on coolant hose and remove upper starter bolt. Installation note: For tightening torque, refer to Technical Data 12 41 1AZ
GRRA3612-018Extract bolt.
GRRA3612-019Remove lower bolt.

 

Set 2:

12 41 020Removing and installing/replacing starter (M42, M43, M44)
GRRA5011-500UGeneral Data, refer to Page 12 00 ... Read fault memory. Disconnect battery earth lead.

1. Terminal 30
2. Terminal 30h
3. Terminal 50
Unscrew bolts. Installation: Tightening torque, refer to Technical Data 12 41 4AZ
GRRA3612-136Releasing starter screw, working from above.
GRRA3612-137Position of upper screw: Between suction unit and firewall. Remove guide tube for oil dipstick. Unscrew screw. Installation: For tightening torque, refer to Technical Data 12 41 1AZ
GRRA3612-135Releasing starter screw, working from below. Installation: For tightening torque, refer to Technical Data 12 41 1AZ
GRRA3612-134Remove starter in downwards direction. Remove starter motor from crown wheel.
GRRA1200-23Turn starter until solenoid switch is at top.
GRRA3612-132Pivot starter down on its mounts. Caution! Do not damage leads!
