Can you help me ID a hawk I just had the pleasure of

Customer Question

Can you help me ID a hawk I just had the pleasure of watching having a sparrow snack in my back yard (Springfield, MA).. Plain gray back, longish tail with pronounced stripes, tan on "pantalettes", breast, and continuing around the head. No spots or other markings that I could see.
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the bird's name and age?
Customer: What?
JA: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the bird?
Customer: The bird flew off, in fine health.. just wondering what kind it was. Am I at the wrong site?

Elaine, I believe that you'll find this site of value: http://carolinabirds.org/HTML/NA_Raptor_Hawk.htm

Looks most like a sharp shinned hawk. Wish I had had a better view of its breast, but that blunt, sharply striped tail was very clear. Thanks for the images

You're welcome, Elaine. It can be a challenge identifying hawks even hands-on.
