My Parakeet Pete has a abscess under his top beak on his right side, I noticed he was not closing his mouth all the way, last night I put some numbing ointment on the swollen part and gave him a little taste of antibiotic Clindamycin Hydrochloride oral liquid, I wanted to ask before I did it again .thank you Julia Maker

I'm sorry to hear of this with your parakeet. Clindamycin can be dosed in a wide range of dosing - 25-150 mg/kg twice daily. I don't know the concentration of your oral liquid. Parakeets usually weight ~ 0.03 kg. In general, abscesses need to be debrided - devitalized tissue is removed and the cavity is then flushed with an antimicrobial solution such as chlorhexidine. Vitamin A deficiency is commonly associated with these abscesses and so I'll inject these birds with vitamin A and initiate vitamin supplementation in their drinking water.
