Customer Question

I have lost two birds in the past two months. The one that I have now that has not been interacting with the other chickens since yesterday. I put her in her nesting box last night and today she has not got up. I feel helpless! I clean the chicken coop every day. I use a clorox and water solution to wipe up mess's. They have clean bedding when need'd and I have been dusting there box's with dimitatious earth. They have a fenced in chicken run out side and a indoor roosting area.

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with today. I do apologize that your question was not answered before. Different experts come online at various times; I just came online, read about your wee one’s situation, and wanted to help.
Again I do apologize that my colleagues could not aid you sooner, but can you tell me:
What other signs has any of these birds had?
Any coughing, sneezing, diarrhea, discharges, breathing difficulties, itching, etc.?
Have they been wormed?
Vaccinated?
What do you feed?
Is this one eating and drinking?

This one is drinking tonight to rehydrate her self. I took her out of the nesting box, put her outside. All she does is huddle by the door . She does not socialize with the other birds during the day, and at night she does not go inside. This is the pattern most of them take until they expire. They eat Purina premium poultry feed, Purina layer pluss, Purina scratch, also apple scraps, lettuce. I clean their coop daily and laying boxes. I have used a liquid dewormer a few drops at a time maybe 4 different times. I recently was told to try volcanic ash. I like staying away from chemicals as much as possible. I live in a area were there are commircial fields all around me .I have now only 18 laying hens. I have never had my chicken vaccinated. When they get like this they pass on slowly. She walked up to the food bowl but does not eat. I am so tired of this. I have had chickens for years and never had a problem like this before.

Thank you,
When was the wormer last given?
Does she have a temperature?
Are her gums/oral tissues pink or pale/white?
Can you take a breathing rate for me (just count her breaths for 10 seconds + multiply that by 6)?
How long has she been refusing food now?
