My budgie had developed a round black and white spotted tumor

Customer Question

My budgie had developed a round black and white spotted tumor type thing on her lower back under her tail feathers where her body meets her tail feathers. She's eating well but her droppings appear to be a bit looser than normal. Today this lump looks like it might be oozing a small amount of blood. She's 10 years old and has always been in good health but this thing on her lower back does not look good. Any ideas what this is?

You've described a tumor, impaction, or infection of the preen gland. Here's a very thorough review of disorders of this gland: http://www.exoticpetvet.net/avian/uropygial.html It would be best to have an avian-oriented vet (please see here: www.aav.org) have a look at Pete. Hopefully, the gland just needs to be cleaned out. Cancers of the gland are quite aggressive and life-threatening. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Hi Mimi,

I'm just following up on our conversation about Pete. How is everything going?
