Customer Question

Ihave had 2 pigeons that have had a one eye colds. Both came on quickly about a week apart. Other than the eye they did not have any other symptoms. After 4 or 5 days each one got a twisted neck. Still no other symptoms, good weight, no diahrea.

Optional Information:
Type of Animal: homing pigeon
Gender: Male
Age: 4or 5
Name of Bird: n/a

Already Tried:
Soaked the eye to keep it open. Put in small cage with a light for heat. Put towels on cage to keep heat in. First one I put on batril the next one I thought was due to a fight so I just put electralites in water. I ended up putting each one down because of the twisted neck.

Hello!

Thank you for your question, I'm Dr. Dan and I'll try to help you.

It sounds like you had a viral or bacterial disease descend on your pigeons. Often these "bugs" will cause eye swelling and then the eye secretion drains into the nose and mouth and is swallowed, the virus or bacterial infection can travel through the Eustachian tube (tube that connects throat to ear) and irritate the inner ear. The inner ear is in charge of balance, when irritated they get dizzy and twist their neck. If any of your other birds come down with this and they continue to eat you don't have to put them down. Many of these cases will resolve on their one in days to weeks. If they are not eating then yes they need extensive nursing care or euthanasia. If they start sneezing or have colored eye discharge during this issue then a bacteria is almost certainly involved and antibiotics will be needed.

I hope this helps shed some light on the subject.

I don't think it is what you said last night because I checked everyone out 1 by 1 today and now there is one that is going in circles and can't fly well. Otherwise it looks very healthy, nothing else wrong with it.

Relist: Other.
I replied to Dr Dan and stated it had to be more or something else and explained why I think that. Anyway that was 12 hours ago and I have not had a reply

I don't feel I received any help from JustAnswer. I was hoping someone would at least tell me what I could give them to hopefully stop more from getting it. Because I wasn't getting anywhere with you I have since taken them to a Vet that gave me medication because I have had 2 more with the same symptoms. They seem to be responding to the medication. I could not wait any longer for you to find an expert. With the 100% satisfaction guarantee I would like what money I have in my account refunded and do not feel there should be any charge for this.
