Customer Question

I have 6 caiques, two of which have just recently paired up. They are all approximately 10 years old. Out of 3 eggs, 2 appear to be fertilized and 1 is translucent. The eggs are now about 28 days since being laid. The pair is being housed separately from the others inside the house in a quiet, warm room. I had read 26 days was normal incubation. What is the range and is there anything I should be doing other than ensuring the most stressful environment and warmth. I have continued with their regular diet of fresh veggies, fresh fruit, pasta, peanut butter on small crackers and half an egg along with a couple of walnuts for treats in the evening. Thank you

Optional Information:
Type of Animal: Caique Parrot
Gender: Male and Female
Age: 10 years
Name of Bird: Chloe and Colby

Already Tried:
Ensuring normal activity range and diet but with quiet and warm room away from other birds.

Hello:

I am Dr. Lisa, a practising veterinarian. Thank-you for submitting your question to JA.

The incubation period is usually 25-26 days, but it can be longer depending on how attentively the hen is sitting on the eggs. Each egg should hatch in the same order in which it was laid.

If you are sure of the lay date, and there is no sign of hatching after 30 days (or whatever interval you choose), then you might want to consider having an egg examined by a vet to determine cause of death.

Also, it sounds like there supplements are wonderful, but they need a balanced base diet in the form of a pellet: I prefer the organic kind at http://www.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/.

Good-Luck,

Dr. Lisa
