my budgie (about 8 yrs) is losing feathers around his vent. what should I do?

First, keep the area clean. If there is poop stuck on it, a "diaper rash" can develop. You can apply 99% aloevera but do not use anything else. He will need to have an avian vet exam and a poop sample taken to look for protozoan and bacterial infection. He may need more testing as well. Nutrition may be playing a role, he should be on high quality pellet and veg, otherwise will have vitamin deficiency and be prone to feather and skin problems. His cage perches and food bowls need to be drubbed on hot soapy water and rinsed well. Get him in soon so that proper diagnosis can be made and correct treatment started.
