Question

Bible verses on prayer?

Sent to General Experts February 09, 2004 1:22 a.m.

I am doing a study on prayer for the remainder of February in a
daily devotional email newsletter I write and I am wanting to get
some verses from the Bible on prayer that have meant
something to someone in the past or present, not just pull them
out of a list from the concordance. Can someone give me 2 or
3 that they feel are special to them or just personally powerful
verses?

I will give a bonus if you can tell me why they are good verses/
special to you.

Dear Author:

I was raised basically on a church pue & now that I no longer practice religion there is one verse that has always stuck with me & means the most.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

To me this means that no matter where in life I go there will always be "the word of God". Never shall I be alone no matter how far I drift from him or others. Strange prayer verse but it's a verse that says He will never leave me.

Thanks for your time.

I appreciate your answer and that IS a great verse, but I'm looking for something a little more specific to prayer since I am writing on that topic.  I do appreciate you taking the time to post.  Once I get a desired answer, I will come back and accept your answer so that you get paid for your thoughtfulness and input.  Thanks!

Hi Amy.

I really like the Book of Jonah. Jonah is constantly struggling with God, running away, getting disgusted when God doesn't punish the Ninevites. This is prayer as conversation between rebellious child and parent.

Jonah's cry from the belly of the whale is terrific:
'Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish, saying, "I called to the LORD, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and thou didst hear my voice. For thou didst cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood was round about me; all thy waves and thy billows passed over me. Then I said, 'I am cast out from thy presence; how shall I again look upon thy holy temple?' The waters closed in over me, the deep was round about me; weeds were wrapped about my head at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me for ever; yet thou didst bring up my life from the Pit, O LORD my God. When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to thee, into thy holy temple. Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their true loyalty. But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to thee; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance belongs to the LORD!" '

All the same, a few days later Jonah is in a snit with God for not smiting the Ninevites:
' "I pray thee, LORD, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that thou art a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and repentest of evil. Therefore now, O LORD, take my life from me, I beseech thee, for it is better for me to die than to live." '

It's a book of about three pages, a perfect little story. ... 'And the LORD said, "You pity the plant, for which you did not labor, nor did you make it grow, which came into being in a night, and perished in a night. And should not I pity Nin'eveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?" '

This is perfect, Sue!  It's exactly what I was wanting.  I am trying to discuss the topic of prayer so as to stress the communication and relationship of God to man.  Showing that it is a conversation from us to God, and trying to also stress the different types of prayer.  This is great!  Thanks!
