I know there is the argument that animals are a lower life form than humans and do not possess free will, nor were they created in the image of God. Therefore, they can not make right or wrong decisions like humans, they are instead run by instinct, and cannot ask for forgiveness like humans. I got into this discussion with a Pastor once.

Personally, though, I believe they have a soul. I believe that while they may not have as advanced of soul as we do, I believe they do have souls. I believe they maintain the innocence of a child and therefore don't need forgiveness. There is no way an animal that brings so much joy and happiness to so many people couldn't.
I think this is an age-old argument that may never truly be figured out.
