Where in the Bible does it say that animals do not have souls?

I was told that the Bible says that animals do not have souls. I wish to know where in the Bible it says that animals do not have souls or implies that animals do not have souls?

I know there is the argument that animals are a lower life form than humans and do not possess free will, nor were they created in the image of God. Therefore, they can not make right or wrong decisions like humans, they are instead run by instinct, and cannot ask for forgiveness like humans. I got into this discussion with a Pastor once.

However, Pope John Paul II declared in a public audience in 1990 that 'also the animals possess a soul and men must love and feel solidarity with our smaller brethren'

Personally, though, I believe they have a soul. I believe that while they may not have as advanced of soul as we do, I believe they do have souls. I believe they maintain the innocence of a child and therefore don't need forgiveness. There is no way an animal that brings so much joy and happiness to so many people couldn't.

I think this is an age-old argument that may never truly be figured out.

Amaralea and Joe,

Thank you so much for your answer. This gives me what I need to communicate my beliefs better and to perhaps give some people more hope about what happens to our lovely, compassionate and, in many cases, supreme animals that we so dearly love and charish. I believe that everything God created has a soul and that his love is in all that he created.

I am so sorry to have not read this earlier. I take care of animals (pets) and they are all deeply imbedded in my heart and soul. I believe they are truly God's blessing to us all and all have a place in Heaven.

Please forgive me for delaying your payment. My days are very, very long, but greatly fulfilled with my four-legged babies.
