Customer Question

I had a gastric sleeve done about 3yrs ago now. It seems like I'm eating more than I used to a year ago, but my weight isn't really changing should I be concerned? I'm just always afraid of stretching out my stomach again.

Hello,
It is normal for portion sizes to increase somewhat after sleeve gastrectomy. With that said, I don't like patients coming in and saying that they can eat just as much as they could before surgery. It doesn't sound like that is the case with you.

Since your weight has stayed the same, I would not be concerned about portion size increasing. If you start gaining weight back, an upper gi series X-ray can be done to evaluate your sleeve. That will tell you if you have developed any problems with the sleeve stretching.

A couple tips worth remembering are:
1. Don't drink while eating. Doing so allows you to eat more food by diluting the solid food in the pouch. Wait a good 30 minutes after meals before drinking. You will find that you end up eating much less.
2. Regulate your own meal size by using a smaller plate and just eating what is on the plate. That keeps you from over-eating the sleeve and helps minimize the risk of stretching it out.

Good luck,
Dr Dan
