Customer Question

My girlfriend had a stomach bypass surgery and its going wonderfully. she is now down over 100pounds! the problem is she has a lot of excess skin that is just hanging there. Other than having another surgical procedure to remove it.... is there anything she can do to help firm up that hanging skin? thanks!

Hello,
When patients lose weight quickly, for whatever reason, the skin cannot keep up. The biggest factors are the amount of weight and genetics. In your girlfriend's situation she just had too much rapid weight loss for her skin elasticity to keep up with.

Patients can sometimes keep the flabby skin from being too excessive by strength training in the gym, in order to build up tone and lean muscle mass. This needs to take place while the patient is losing weight. Unfortunately, your girlfriend has already lost the weight, and the excess skin already present. At this point, the only recourse would be surgical skin removal.

Good luck,

Dr. Dan
