In gastric bypass surgery, since the majority of the stomach is separated from the newly formed small pouch and left in place, what function does it have since no food is entering it?
There are several variations on gastric bypass surgery, but is there is a blind sac that is Y-connected, it does not perform much function. It will still secrete gastric juices that pass downstream via a Y-connection, but it is not directly involved int he digestion of food. Some of the enzymes from the stomach have some level of activity in the small intestine, but they are not as potent as in the acidic environment of the stomach.
