Customer Question

I had rny gastric bypass surgery in november 2004. In April of 2005, I got pregnant. In the 5 months post-op and pre-pregnancy, I lost 113lbs. My weight loss paused during my pregnancy. I've been going back in forth with about 15 lbs since then. I'm considering the overstitch procedure, but I can't find enough information on it to truly consider it a viable option. What are the pros and cons? If not the overstitch...then what?

Hi,
The stitch procedure (stomaphyx) is rarely beneficial for bypass patients in the long-term. What I would recommend is visiting your surgeon (or a reputable bariatric surgeon that performs revisions) for a consult. S/he will want to get an upper GI series X-ray to deteine if your pouch is stretched out or not. If the pouch is stretched out, the beat procedure currently available would be to put an adjustable gastric band in you, to recreate good portion control.

If your pouch is small, then an honest assessment of your eating and nutrition is in order. Most bypass patients stop losing weight, not because of portions, but because they eat the wrong foods. A good bariatric program will have comprehensive nutritional counseling and support groups to help you with this.

Good luck!
Dr Dan
