This answer was rated:

I recived a letter from a collection agenccy saying I owe money to a furniture company which went bankrupt in 2000. The bill is from 1998. Do I have to pay?

No, you do not have to pay it. The statute of limitations in California on a debt is 4 years. After that, if you have made no payments or agreements in writing, you do not owe the debt anymore. Don't write to them, talk to them, or anything.
If they try to take you to court, tell the court the debt is expired because of the statute of limitations and they will dismiss the case. Good luck to you!
