Why does it take 4 months from filing date in Calif to finish BK? Are they searching for assets? Do they look in other states besides the one you file in?

The bankruptcy time periods are governed by the Federal Bankruptcy Code. Four months is the minimum time period between filing the petition and obtaining a discharge in all states.

Typically the bankruptcy trustee will investigate the assets of the debtor. This usually includes a review of all tax returns and asset searches

Thank you. Yes,for some reason the answer had not come through until later. Do they conduct motor vehicle searches in states other than the state you file in as well?

The trustee has the ability to conduct a motor vehicle search in other states. I do not think that the trustee routinely searches all states in all bankruptcy cases.
