In 2008 I had to file chapter 13 due to a unforseen tax problem and the housing crash. I have one more payment to pay next September then I will be free of my obligation. Question: How long will my credit be ruined and how can I begin to rebuilt it? Prior to the filing I had a good credit score and never missed a payment on any credit card, mortgage pmt, car loan, utility bill, etc. It was on the advise of my attorney to stop paying all my bills with exception of my utilities and car payment. I sold my house on a short sale. Please Advise, Thank you.
Over 33 years, I have assisted my clients with debt problems having filed more than 32000 Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 Bankruptcy petitions. The BK stays on your credit rpeport for 10 yearss. but it is not a question of how long your credit will be ruined. The question really is how long will it take to improve my credit. And once the 13 is completed, you will see an automatic jump in your score. and each month it willl continue to increase. Finally, typically for my clients, you should see your score be where it was before you filed within three years after you filed the chapter 13.
