how long can a bank go after you on a charged off account

i have two charged off accounts from 1998 1 is a credit card , the other a repo after sale was 5,400.00 now 10,815.00 the bank notified me 5/13/08. is"nt their a 7 year limit.

It depends upon the state and the state whose law is specified in the contract. You, as many other people, are confusing the reporting periods for Fair Credit Reporting Act with the Statute of Limitations. They are different laws but often confused.
