I have a 6 yr old autistic son with ADHD as well. He slams his head repeatedly on the floor, slaps his self, bites his self an others around him when he has a freak out. What would help to prevent him from hurting his self an others?
Optional Information: Person's Gender: Male Person's Age: 6 Already Tried: I have tried soflty talking to him, ignoreing him when it first starts, time out corner, a lil splash of water, and holding him to prevent him from doing harm to him self.
I know this may sound harsh to do but it is advised to restrain the child by hugging him with his arms crossed his chest while you hold his hands and he is facing away from you. Calmly in a non threatening voice explain "no that behavior is wrong and it hurts" explain you will help him by holding him until he feels calm enough to stop. The closeness gives them reassurance and a sense of security. This may be hard to do at first since you do have to use a bit of muscle to keep them in the position. You can also try singing to him during this time. Fin a song you know he likes that calms him down. Then sing the song during restraint time and encourage him to sing it with you. This serves as a distraction and also redirects the child into a different behavior.
I have also done this as well. Sometimes it works but most of the time it don't. He gets more frustrated an head butts me in the face. He is a lil over 80 lbs an 4 foot 2. He can throw me around. I get sweaty an wore out tring to calm him an he keeps goin untill he is wiped out an then some.
