RE: PUBLIC HOUSUNG My Mother currently lives in public

Customer Question

RE: PUBLIC HOUSUNG
My Mother currently lives in public housing in Melbourne provided by the Department of Human Services (DHS). She has lived in the property for 25 years.
In 2012 she inherited a property from a deceased family member. She advised DHS of this fact and her rent increased from $125 per week to $250 per week.
She recently sold the property and has paid several outstanding debts and has decided to give the remaining money to her children.
My question is, will her rent decrease now she no longer has the inherited property or the funds from the sale? If not, is there a way to have her rent decreased again?

Hello
Arguably she can, the issue is with respect of the debts outstanding and how much she has left from gifting the amounts to her children.

As you have said 'remaining money' I assume she has no money left.

Thus, they should be able to reduce the amount as she is in a position now whereby the has little to live on.
if they do not accept, you can file an application with the ombudsman.
