Does the accused need to show proof as to why they didnt

Customer Question

Does the accused need to show proof as to why they didnt show up to court, the accused adjourned the first sentencing and has now failed to show up, then the next day he had a lawyer say the accused had a medical emergency

The accused's lawyer would presumably have provided some evidence to support the allegation that the accused had a medical emergency or, would have undertaken to provide that evidence on the next occasion if it were unavailable at the time. Only the court and the prosecution would normally be privy to what information was provided to the court, however.
