2002 subaru impreza 2.0l auto. battery seems ok. turns over

Customer Question

2002 subaru impreza 2.0l auto. battery seems ok. turns over rapidly.
JA: Have you tested the battery with a voltmeter? And can you see if it's leaking or not?
Customer: No
JA: Are you fixing your Impreza yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Changed with charged up battery. Then wound over continuosly and did not start. then jumped off an other car an it started straight away.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: Could it be the terminals on battery not being clean? or both batteries are dropping too much charge as they both show 12.5 volts and are older batteries one not sure one two and a half years old and been sitting around most of the time? the engine does turn over rapidly

This is my son's impreza and he is a uni student with little car mechanical experience. I am trying to help him with not cost.
It has not started twice in the morning. Not really cold weather. Once started in the morning it seems ok for starts during the day.
If it happens again rather than jump starting I will get the multi meter out. What do I test?
Expert:  Gary replied 1 month ago.

Hello there,

My multi meter can trap min volts while cranking.

This is what you need to look at.

Some cars will not start if cranking volts drops below 10, some at 9 volts.
