I'd say the next step is to drain the front transmission oil out into a container and as it exits the unit strain it through some paper towel to catch any debris
this will show how serious the issue is
if the oil is black and sticky and has metal shavings in it then it very likely to be on its last legs
however if the oil is still clean then you're OK to drive home
I'd expect to pay about $400 for a good used unit with a 30 day warrenty and then another 4-5 hours labour to swap it over
