I have a 2003 Holden Astra ts with z18xe and 4 speed auto.

Customer Question

Hi I have a 2003 Holden Astra ts with z18xe and 4 speed auto. Problem is that it's stuck on limp mode, at least I think that's what's going on, car runs okay but it is really loud and when D selected it has no power and wont go. if I manually change from 1st to 2nd to 3rd it's okay, but won't change to D at all . The gear lever feels like it goes from third to neutral and D doesn't exists. No problem with reverse and It's not overheating, and no other obvious issues, the emmissions light, oil light and traction control light are all on all the time. Fault codes are p0700, p0100, p1700, p1895 and p0325 and p0170 p0130. Will driving it in limp mode be okay? Any help would be great.

Hi Cass,

3rd gear is the default when in limp home mode.

Takes off in 3rd gear, hence while it feels like low power.

Could be one of many things, you need a good Holden tech to look at your car.

All of you codes listed are important to look at.

I would start at the P0100 and P1895.

Hi Gary, can you elaborate on what the codes are?

Hi Cass,

The P1700 is the transmission not communicating with the engine.

P0700 is the engine requesting MIL on.

P0100 is MAF related.

P0130 and p0170 are O2 sensor related.

How many kms on this engine now?

Hi Gary,Engine has 200000 kms give or take. Will check the o2 sensirs and Maf sensor this weekend and clean/ replace as required, with the transmission issue is there anything you can advise or suggest that I can do to fault check and possibly narrow down the actual issue ? Alternatively could the transmission fault be caused by the maf and o2 sensor issues that are present? Can I still drive the car in limp mode?ThanksCass

Hi Cass,

I would not drive it while it is in limp home mode.

Limp home means that, not keep driving.

Astra is common for sloppy gearshift (cable worn).

Is yours like that?

The sensors aren't necessarily faulty.

They may be telling the truth of what they measure.

Example is an engine with cam belt timing wrong, MAF reads wrong, O2 reads wrong, engine low power, logs codes etc.

I would be looking at the cam belt, water pump, tensioner and idlers etc, the transmission shift cable, and then the existing codes.

I would rub the codes out, and see what occurs in what order.

Hi Gary, got the car home today and we are going to start with the things you suggested, first one being the cable as it's really loose. Appreciate your help and advice W
