I may need to replace the ballast on my RX330 headlight -

Customer Question

I may need to replace the ballast on my RX330 headlight - just looking into how big a job it is
JA: What is the model/year of your Lexus?
Customer: sorry 2003
JA: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Swapped a new hid bulb in and not work. Cant open other side as the "lid" wont budge. If I could do that then I would swap bulbs across and confirm its not a bulb problem.
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: Aparrently the bulbs have an inbuilt ignitor but a separate ballast. Different youtube videos on other lexus models (nothing on RX330) show all sorts of procedures needed - even one using a heat gun to loosen the seal on the headlight cover (how to replace lexus headlight/headlamp/ballast/removal/hid/is220d/250/350
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg5mfRTORqY) Others talk about removing the wheel and taking the lining out to get to bolts, others about removing the bumper. Just looking for clear information on my model.
JA: Have you checked the coolant level? Has there been any leaking from the hoses?
Customer: No - whats the coolant got to do with the headlights? Ive already replaced the HID lamp - everything is fine condition-wise

Hi Dan it is nighttime here - I wont be able to action anything straight away. Ive not used "justanswer.com" before - they said it was a $5 deposit then $23(AU) for the answer. I wont be able to tell if you have helped until I can get stuck into it. How long does this issue stay open for without incurring additional expense? Also, I had a quick scan of all you pasted in there and I cant really see where it mentions swapping out the actual ballast. It just seems to talk about all different types of bulbs. Ive already swapped the bulb in question. As your information talks about removing the bumper I assume it is on the path I need, as the bulbs were accessable without any such action. Is there additional information about accessing the actual ballast?
Thankyou, Andrew.
Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

That is everything from the service manual on the ballast. Yes you need to remove the bumper.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
There appears to be no information on how to remove the bumper(?)
Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

There is not a procedure in the manual for this. I can try to talk you through it. The bumper is held on by plastic clips and screws in the corners.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I just found this online - that should do it(?)http://articles.dashzracing.com/installation-pdf/take-out-lexus-rx330-front-bumper.pdf
Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

Yes that should work. I have access to the mechanical service manual, the one you sent was a body shop manual. I deal with the mechanical side.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Ok, cool, thanks. So, I probably realistically wont get hod of a ballast for a couple of days - will this conversation and its attachments still be accessable for me? Will I be able to get back to you if I have further questions?
Expert:  Dan replied 2 months ago.

The question will stay open for 7 days. Save this page to your favorites.
