I disagree with your Mechanic as this is need to check the fuel temp.

The fuel temp is used by the ECM to control fuel and air mix.

The temp of the fuel determine how much fuel is sent in so that the fuel economy are kept in control.

Hot fuel is less dense than colder fuel which leads to differences in amount of fuel sent in if.

This sensor will set a malfunction code and in most cases trip on the check engine light .

May be a problem on your next MOT test .
