If there is noise from the left timing chain then the chain has to be loose. A cam phaser issue can cause chain noise but I'm not aware of variable valve timing being used that far back and the service information does not show it being used on this, but that would explain the noise going away with the cam sensor unplugged.
Timing chain noise can be caused by chain stretch, gear wear, guide wear and the hydraulic tensioner. Most likely a combination of all of these is causing the noise, incorrect cam timing will also cause driveability issues.
