navara d40 2.5 turbo diesel auto. It stalled..rough..timing chain

I have a navara d40 2.5 turbo diesel auto. It stalled on me in my driveway and was very hard to start and ran very rough. The mechanic said he tried some things and is now wanting to do the timing chain, it only has 90,000 km. Do you think he is on the right track because it sounds very expensive.
