Nissan: it wont start when temperature is under 5 degrees..relay

Customer Question

Hi, we own a 4.8 Patrol, 2005 model, auto. The problem we are having is that it won't start when temperature is under 5 degrees. We had the computer downloaded at a Nissan dealer and we were told it was the inhibitor relay sensor which we had replaced however the problem still exists. Further problems are now showing up which all seem to be related to the cold weather. The engine is derating and sometimes locks transmission to second gear with the engine fault light showing. After another computer download we were advised to replace the throttle sensor body however this hasn't fixed the problem.
Thanks
Jack

Jack was any codes found if yes what where they .

You could have two issue here if the Transmission is going into limp mode (2nd gear)

Greg, the code that showed up was a faulty throttle sensor and as mentioned I've replaced the whole throttle sensor body however that didn't fix the problem. Early morning seems to be the problem and the only way I can get the car to start is to open the inhibitor relay up and push the diode together. This allows the car to start however the engine fault light shows and the car goes into limp mode. After work, say around 7pm, no problems at all. Car starts perfectly and runs like a dream.

Hi Jack

A TPS malfunction will put you into limp mode as this is also used for the transmission input sensors .
If the TPS has been replaced then i suggest you check the connection on the TPS

What was the code P0122 P0123 ?

Greg

Greg, Could you explain please what a TPS malfunction is? They found P1772, P1705, P1122, P1123. As mentioned the P1705 (Throttle Position Sensor) was already dealt with and the throttle body replaced 6 mths ago however the fault showed up again recently. The transmission doesn't stop the car from starting - our problem is getting the car started first up in the morning. Once we get it going it runs fine.

Hi.
The P1772 is the Low coast brake solenoid (transmission)
Possible cause for this issue is the wiring harness or connector (solenoid circuit open or sorted, or a bad solenoid.

P1705 TPS , Harness or connector .or the sensor has a short .

P1122 Electronic throttle control ,

P1123 basically the same as above .

I would have the throttle control pedal checked ,is a know problem that will trip the other codes have this tested before replacing as it may also be a electrical wiring harness or connection issue.

Kind regards Greg.

Thanks for all that. But what are your thoughts on the main problem we have which is the car not starting at all on cold mornings unless we tamper with the inhibitor relay as mentioned above. We have tried a complete new relay but this didn't make any difference.

Hi Greg, I've checked and cleaned the grounds however still have the same problem. The car hasn't started for the last 2 mornings. Most frustrating at 5.30am. I've also cleaned all the electrical plugs under the bonnet. Any other suggestions .......
