Customer Question

97 a6, 170000, overheated, coolant temp pegged and then oil temp pegged. Had towed home and when cooled filled reserve tank and checked oil. Tried to start, but there was no ignition. Audi, BMW service place did pressure check and says # XXXXX cylinder has a crack in block. Thnaks

There's no question- just a description of your engine failure.

Does this sound like a good analysis of failure. If engine replacement is not worth it (estimate $5000-$8000)

Well, I wouldn't expect the block to crack by itself- if there is a crack, I would expect that it was caused by driving it while it was overheating. Overheating and coolant loss may have been caused by something as simple as a leaking rubber hose or plastic coolant flange, or a bad coolant pump, or a failed head gasket.
I'd say, for a 1997, that's a lot of money. You'd have to consider what you think the condition of the rest of the car is in, and what it is worth in that condition if the engine were fixed. No use paying $8k to have a car worth $5k, right? Of course, if you're not looking to sell it, just keep driving it, what would it take to put you in a comparable car? And how reliable are the other parts of the vehicle right now- the suspension, the brake system, etc. You don't want to put a lot of money into it if other systems are going to fail and cost even more.

I probably traveled 100 to 200 yards before tulrning off ignition. If it is a head gasket would thlat keep it from not firing at all? And is there a test for failed head gasket? Thanks.

Hello ,
Here to answer automotive questions and make you feel comfortable and become familiar with your product.

You need an engine if the block is cracked. Does not matter how it happened because it cannot be repaired only replaced. If the cylinders are full of coolant no it will not start. Yes there is a head gasket test of course but you need not worry because the entire engine will be replaced.
