we have no heat in our a4. we were told be our mecanic that it was due to a leak of exhaust into the cooling system and that the heater core was a high point and collected the exhaust. the car runs fine with no overheating problems, but an exhaust smell is present in the colling system. we were told that we need to resurface or replace the heads at an expense of $3000 or more.... your advice? repair or dump the car? worth the rebuild?

Is your mechanic an Audi specialist? Sounds to me like you're taking your car to a generic mechanic and he doesn't know what's wrong with your car. There's a chemical test that sucks air from the cooling system through a turkey baster looking thing and the fluid in it changes colors with the presence of exhaust fumes. One of the most common problems with the A4 and VW Passat is that it clogs up due to corrosion and causes lack of heat. So, I'd find a new mechanic if it isn't a VW/Audi specialist or get a second opinion. I've only seen one Audi blow a headgasket without being SEVERELY overheated. I doubt that's what's wrong with your car and even if it is that price is around a thousand dollars too high.Danny
